I would love to see Donalyn connect reading instruction to the ideas in the various novels that she is having her students read in class. Since each text can be so different, I would like to watch her skills at play while she thinks aloud and engages students in discussion about TEKS content. I would also like to watch Donalyn utilize technology and APPS in order to foster novel reading in class. How is she integrating technology in order to meet the needs of her students? How is she adapting her instructional techniques as culture evolves?

  2. Well, asking me to choose between which of these two authors I'd like to see "in action" is like asking me to choose my favorite book or my favorite child--impossible! ;)

I would love to see Donalyn conferring with her students. I'd also love to see the ownership her students take of their classroom literacy life and just witness the literacy passion evident in her classroom. (If you haven't read her second book, "Reading in the Wild," I highly recommend it.)

I agree with Jeremy, I would like to hear/see more about Donalyn's actual reading instruction (of skills and strategies) in her classroom versus how she promotes the love of reading.

I have seen many videos on DVD and on Jan Richardson's website of her in action with students, but I would relish the opportunity to see this in person. She is so gifted at scaffolding and prompting the readers with whom she works. She is able to quickly dig down to the root of students' struggles and provide support in student-friendly language.

  3. Comment from Heather Horton- Yes, you guys are so right! These authors are amazing educators! So are you, by the way!
I think I would enjoy seeing Donalyn working with the hardest to reach students over time... that would definitely light my fire! (Maybe she needs a reality show! LOL). I would also love to see the skill part of her day or the integration of it. I have never taught above Second Grade in the classroom. I could learn so much!
Now, I would just enjoy getting to see Jan Richardson in action, especially in a classroom, while interacting with students in literacy stations. Those kinds of things give me ideas. I love her book, too. Since she was a Reading Recovery Teacher Leader, I think her book resonated with me. My guided reading groups and tutoring groups have looked similar to hers for years. Marie Clay is in our blood! I was so glad Jan found a way to organize those ideas in a teacher friendly , but very informative book for teachers.
I am such a nerd, I just want to meet them, have lunch with them and pick their brains....Maybe an interview and a selfie or two....
